Maintenance & Recommendations
While water tanks can be cleaned anytime if there are specific issues like dead animals, debris build up, or suspected contamination, we generally recommend scheduling a cleaning before the spring or summer months.
Warmer temperatures create an ideal environment for bacteria to multiply, so proactively cleaning your tank beforehand can help prevent potential health issues and ensure your water stays fresh and safe throughout the warmer seasons.
Several factors influence cleaning frequency: the number of downpipes, surrounding environment (e.g., overhanging trees), and gutter protection systems. Generally, tanks with at least one downpipe accumulate significant sludge within five years. Government guidelines recommend checking for sludge every 2-3 years. Don’t be fooled by suggestions of yearly cleaning!
Several signs indicate a need for cleaning: unusual smells, tastes, or discoloration of the water; frequent filter blockages or replacements; and noticing an odor, especially in hot water (e.g., during showers). If it’s been several years since your last cleaning or if you’ve recently moved into a new home, it’s safe to assume your tank is due for a cleaning.
